Kids smoking in fashion shots from Flavourwire
November 28, 2011
I don’t know how they found these but some very freaky pictures from Flavourwire of Kids smoking in fashion shots by photographer Frieke Janssens who is based in Belgium and claims the series was inspired by the recent smoking bans there as well as pictures of a two year old nicotine addict from Indonesia. More on the story at Flavourwire who found it at Neatorama.
So is is just sensationalist work? There is a video link which shows although the kids are actually holding the cigarettes, and goodness knows how they found parents who would allow offspring top do that, they are only blowing out air, so some puffs have been added afterwards and the cigarettes were made of cheese, so is it art or just pure controversy?
I expect these to be all over the web soon.

Brooklyn Flea market, great for vintage kids chairs and toy’s and some cute children’s fashion too.
November 4, 2011
Venturing over the river is not something many visitors to Manhattan do and with good reason as it can be hard to get a taxi back again and the trains can be a hairy ride but having taxied over to the Brooklyn Flea market at Kent and North 6th St I discovered a great way to get there.
The Flea market is situated on the banks of the East River with Manhattan views and is right next to the landing stage for the new NY Waterway Ferry service from East 34th St to Brooklyn. As well as the easiest journey you also get a fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline.
The Flea itself is fairly upmarket with vintage traders. lots of food stalls and new small traders making their own merchandise, great for vintage kids chairs, books and toys and also look out for re-worked vintage fabric kids clothes from Dolls and Robots , whacky T-shirts for kids and adults from Gnome Enterprises, and cute soft toys from Kate Durkin.
For those so inclined there is a good selection of animal trophy heads too! Another goos point, it doesn’t start till 10.00am so you don’t have to haul yourself up out of bed too early, in fact I was there at 10.30 and stall holders were still setting up.
Sunday 10am – 5pm Brooklyn Flea, Williamsburg east river water front (btw. N 6th and N 7th) Brooklyn, NY

Yoya and Yoyamart, smart shopping for kids fashion in New Yorks Meat Packing district
November 2, 2011
My first look at the Yoya stores in New York, renowned for their cool taste and pulled together styling for children’s fashion. The stores used to be in one company but are now run separately and distinctive styles are appearing in both shops.
Yoyamart is for the 5+ older children with a strong selection of clothing and toy’s from brands such as MunsterKids, Imps and Elfs, C&C and toys by Areaware, Kid Robot and Uglydoll. There was an amazing kids version of the classic Eames chair in the store when I visited and I loved the clean and simple shoes display area.
Yoya is for babies and upwards with great nursery furniture, lunchboxes by French Company Lale, Caramel Baby and Child, Antik Batik, Soft Gallery, their own brand clothing and beautiful animals in sweet floral prints.
Both stores are worth a visit and when you have finished shopping the new High Line Park walkway in the old railway tracks is really close by, its a fantastic way to get up to Midtown above from all the street noise and grime and very relaxing.

The Lollipop Shoppe and Its Nice That combine to celebrate London Design
September 5, 2011
This is sure to be a collectible, the bloggers at Its Nice That.com and London’s Lollipop Shoppe have combined to produce a free magazine handed out at the London Design Festival to promote awareness of the event.
The Lollipop Shoppe is a treasure trove of design classics and features great kids items featuring almost every classic chair design ever so I can’t wait to see what they have produced.
London Design Festival runs from 15th September for 9 days with a wealth of events and exhibitions well worth checking out. In the meantime here are a few of the Lollipop Shoppe’s goodies.

I was browsing the blog Sir Paul Smith writes for Vogue as I often do, mainly because Sir Paul knows a jolly good Art Exhibition when he sees one and often flags up interesting stuff, as one would expect from him and I was intrigued by this exhibition by Kate Jenkins of crochet thingymajigs which opened yesterday at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in Charlotte St.
They are brilliant, what a great sense of humour, I love them all. The exhibition runs till the 24th September but there is a good selection online here, do check them all out. Kate Jenkins has a background in high fashion knitwear but it seems her art career is taking off now too, her website Cardigan Ltd features her womenswear, cushions and some very cute keyrings too.

My Giant Colouring Book by Jake and Dinos Chapman at The Museum of Childhood in September
August 11, 2011
An exhibition of etchings from Jake and Dinos Chapman was never going to be innocent but what they have done for this Hayward Gallery touring show is use the principle of the old join-the-dot children’s colouring books and added their own colourful narrative.
This series of 21 etchings was first published in 2004 and shows many of their favourite themes such as monstrous creatures including sabre toothed owls, psychedelic grinning cats and bears trapped in the belly of the Loch Ness Monster. According to Dinos Chapman ” (They) are about how wrong you could make an image”
So if your child loves a good dark evil storytale and won’t be kept up late at night by scary images just the thing for a wet autumn weekend then!
10th September – 8th January at The Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PA

One of my son’s favourite parts of Christmas is his stocking and the Muji toy gifts inside and this year there are a lot of new covetable little treats to be popped into Xmas stockings.
Also the soft toy range has been extended to include turtles, elephants and footballs and there are some fabulous new wooden selections with additions to the city in a bag ranges too. Good to see that the recent troubles in Japan haven’t limited the great imaginations out there.

Since the closure of his named store in 2008 Thorsten van Elten had kept an online presence with Theo, a website for the quirky and collectable in a small way, he has now expanded the selection and is giving the site a lot more attention, even cooking us all a Black Forest Gateau to his grandmother’s recipe for his recent open day!
The store was known amongst design afficianado’s as the place to find the latest and coolest items hot from the design fairs.
New items for this winter such as the crinkled glasses and jug by Rob Brandt mix with old favourites such as the pigeon light by Ed Carpenter and woolly sheep by Hanns-Peter Krafft and there is a multitude of smaller gift items to choose from including a great selection of Donna Wilson goodies (more on Donna later this week). Children’s tablewear, tin and wood toys and even the most sophisticated times table you have ever seen also play a part in his selections.
By the way Theo is his middle name, so he’s keeping his name in there still, and the store has a very nifty canvas shopper free while stocks last for orders over £50 too.

Since we are in Trade show season and talking fashion commerce it is quite refreshing to find a collection that is pure imagination for children’s clothing.
Not many students choose to present graduation collections in kidswear but perhaps they should, judging by the fun that Caroline Bosmans seem to have had here.
Her collection, called Cow Cow and Cows for her final year at the SASK Belgium was nominated and awarded for Legaat Hulstaert.
She is a mother of three children herself, and a psychological therapist who has been fascinated by kid’s fashion for a number of years so perhaps has a head start on some of the other students!

They had forecast heavy showers and cold weather but this afternoon the sun came out and celebrated the Royal Wedding with the rest of the country.
There were street parties a plenty, my goodness red, white and blue is a good combination for cheeriness. Thank goodness they were all allowed to go ahead, it was great fun and a day the kids will always remember.
My thanks to the residents of Mina Rd, Mayfield Rd, Cecil Rd and Effra Rd all in the Royal Borough of Wimbledon.
